The Warrior Race #4, 2018
Venue: Bilton Wine Estate, Stellenbosch
Category: Black Ops Elite
Position: Not where I wanted to be…. I am happy and sad about this race. I knew that I had put in the hard hours and wanted to prove to myself that I am as good as I believe I am. I was going to run harder and faster than ever before and push myself to my limit.

We started like always with the one and only, Warrior Ric getting us pumped and ready to go. And off we were, with a nice hill to “warm” us up. The scenery was amazing during the run but some of those hills were damn steep. The one hill really looked like it would never end, and a few people were forced to walk bits of it. But what goes up, must come down, and the downhill was awesome and fast! So fast, I had to tie my shoelaces at the bottom….

I was running like a machine and loved every minute. Smashing obstacles along the way and always trying to keep up with whoever I could see in front of me. Even with the hills, I kept getting closer and closer to the guys in front of me, even passing a few.

But then my race got thrown upside down. I came to a rope traverse through a long stretch of water. But as I wanted to start, I realised that the slack on the ropes were way too much and I couldn’t use it to keep me above the water. Yes, it’s sad, but I cannot really swim. And the 1st two times a tried to go and swallowed water, the fear of drowning sunk in. I spent 10min I saw on Strava in that water. Not being able to go. The one lifeguard came around and offered to swim behind me for in case. I knew I had to go, but the fear is something I can’t explain. I finally went for it and swallowed water 4 times during the traverse. Every time freaking out more than before and really almost giving up close to the end. I survived my fear, but lost so much time.

After that, I was trying to get my heart rate down and rush to get to the finish. I got to Breaking Point and Iron Rig and went through without any hesitation or rest. I needed to finish. And sorry to say to Warrior, but that was too easy compared to the previous Warrior. Except for the tyre pull of course. They were massive again.

I just want to say thank you to Alisa van Rooyen for taking some awesome photos and for the support with Sammy Nel and Trevor Nel there at the end. To WarriorFit for getting me running and helping me. To OCT South Obstacle Course Training for all the training and support I get. And a huge HOORAH to Andrew Christopher Leeburn for completing his 1st Black Ops Elite and smashing it and to Cindy Wills and Brandon Hulley for kicking ass like always.
